C drive is full for no reason: find the real culprit

"For no reason" almost always means "in places Explorer does not show". Windows itself reserves tens of gigabytes for the page file, hibernation, restore points and update leftovers - and apps quietly grow caches in AppData. Here is where to look, in order of likely payoff.

Stop guessing - map the drive

The table covers the system's share. The bigger half is usually yours: forgotten video exports, a game library, node_modules, VM disks. A disk map shows it in one look - open C: in a space analyzer, and the biggest sectors are your answer. CleanMyWin scans a full system drive in under a minute and lets you delete straight to the Recycle Bin, so a wrong guess costs nothing.

What not to delete

Frequently asked

Why does my C drive keep filling up by itself?

Update caches, restore points, growing app caches in AppData and the Recycle Bin. Map the drive with an analyzer to see which one it is in your case.

Is it safe to disable hibernation?

Yes, if you do not use hibernate or Fast Startup: powercfg /h off frees a file about 40% the size of your RAM.

How much space should stay free?

Keep 10-15% of the drive free so updates and the page file have room to breathe.
